 The Sounds Of Our Garden

Chimes

In India and later in China, small wind chimes were hung at each corner of a pagoda. In Roman times, chimes were hung in gardens and porticoes where they would make a tinkling sound as the wind passed through them. They are also hung under the corners of roofs of temples, palaces or outside a building or residence as well as in gardens, as a visual and aural ornament.

Wind chimes are often made from tubes, rods, or bells but can also be made of metal, wood, glass, bamboo or shell. They are now being increasingly used indoors. Thought to be good luck in parts of Asia, they are used in Feng Shui.

The Garden of Light carries wind chimes of different sizes, shapes and materials.

More suitable for outdoor chimes, select from these brands made from wood and metal:

• Festival, handcrafted of weather resistant materials, these chimes are hand tuned to produce a balanced scale which is soothing and pleasant to listen to.
• Corinthian Bells, hand tuned to the scale of C, are weather resistant.
• Arias Chimes have beautiful tones and excellent resonance. They are durable and weather resistant.
• Weatherland Chimes are individually hand-tuned to clear, classical notes that resonate peaceful melodies. They are weather resistant.

Chimes more suitable for indoor use are those made from fabric, glass, metal and capiz shells, Not weather resistant, many of these can be also be used outdoors in protected areas.

Gongs

Originating in Asia, gongs are the oldest and most genuine musical instruments. Both in ancient times and today, gongs have been used for meditation, to make announcements, to make music, to accompany life’s events and to heal.

You may select from two types of gongs: Balinese Gamelan or Traditional Tibetan.

Tingshas

Tingshas have been used for centuries in India as a part of the devotional singing performance called Bhajans. The sound of a tingsha is like a summons. When the two circular metal discs strike each other they produce a clear, pure, cleansing sound which can be used to focus the mind before and after chanting or meditation.

In Feng Shui they are used to ring in the four corners of a room to open the energy. As well they are used to clear spaces of negative energies.

The Garden of Light carries small, medium and large tingshas with varying sounds and designs. They are made in Nepal or India from plain brass. They are etched with icons or mantras.

Singing Bowls

A singing bowl is a metal bowl usually made in Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal or India. Bowls are either hand hammered or machine made. Traditionally, a singing bowl is made from seven to nine sacred metals which include: gold, silver, mercury, copper, iron, tin and antimony. Modern singing bowls may contain a combination of three or four different metals.

When the bowl is struck or vibrated with a wooden mallet it produces a unique sound determined by its shape and the metals in it. This sound can be used in meditation and to promote natural healing.

The Garden of Light carries a large variety of modern hand and machine made bowls as well as antique and museum quality singing bowls. They vary in sizes, sounds and designs. We also carry mallets, also called hammers or sticks, as well as singing bowl cushions.

Bells

Used for thousands of years, bells have been a significant part of religious practices and rituals. The “singing” of a bell can also be used as a focal point in meditation. The Garden of Light carries the distinctive Tibetan BellsBells and Dorje, called Vajra in Nepal, are symbolic objects used by the Dharma traditions of Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism. Normally used together, the Dorje is held in the right hand and represents the male principle of the universe, while the bell is held in the left hand and represents the female principle of the universe. The Dorje, often spelled as Dorge, originally was a symbol for the Thunderbolt wielded by the Hindu god Indra. In Buddhism, it became a symbol for both a thunderbolt and a diamond and is associated with the path to enlightenment. As a thunderbolt cuts through the dark of night, and a diamond can cut through any material, it is believed that an enlightened mind can cut through the fog of ignorance and confusion which we normally live in. At a deeper level Dorje means fitness of action, which is considered the same as Compassion (Karuna in Sanskrit) in some Buddhist schools, while the bell represents Wisdom (Prajna in Sanskrit)., in varying sizes, handmade by craftspeople in Nepal.
